Although she was born in Kingston, Melanie Schwapp is a self-proclaimed country girl. Growing up in the hills surrounding the tourist mecca that is Montego Bay, Melanie spent her childhood days climbing trees, picking bramble and lounging on the shores of the famed Doctor’s Cave Beach. Today, this vivacious socialite calls the Corporate Area home, having fully embraced the chaotic tempo of modern, city living. Her days are now chockful of roles as wife to husband Philip, aka Chunky, mom to Briana, Daniel and Claire, thought-provoking author and sought-after decorator.
“When it comes to decorating, I don’t follow rules, I don’t like them,” proudly proclaims Melanie. I always say I decorate homes not houses. I think you should fill your space with things you like and what you’re comfortable with,” she quips.
When the Schwapps’ home search began in earnest some 15 years ago Melanie knew she wanted somewhere safe and private. Since the outdoors had played such a vital part in her own upbringing, the new abode had to have plenty of greenery for her children. In a quiet, secluded nook in the suburban oasis of Manor Park, the Schwapps nabbed their perfect property and set out to add their personal flair to the house.
Melanie’s décor style is decidedly eclectic with a penchant for antiques, modern pieces and everything in
between. All her furniture and accessories have been lovingly handpicked and each item boasts an intriguing back story. Inspired by Houzz, an online remodelling and design platform, Maco Magazine and Pinterest, Melanie has expertly pulled together a home that is cosy, chic and unique.

East Meets West
At the home’s main entry, an arched doorway opens onto a lofty great room. The space sports a cornucopia of local and international furnishings plucked from Melanie’s far flung travels. Along a wall sits an exotic, Indonesian dinner bell made up of a black and gold gong, and topped with two colourful snakes. Next to this statement piece stands a Chinese rice chest garnished with ceramic milk jugs and a massive salad bowl carved out of wood. Since the home serves as a prime gathering spot, there is an abundance of seating scattered about its 4,000 square foot floor plan. In this front room, a large, Jamaican made table comfortably seats 14 on a montage of single chairs and a long wooden bench.
