The Elegant look – You have decided to do a ‘paint-over’, now it’s time to choose your colours. What shades ignite your passion or make you feel at peace? Are you the less is more type where the neutral palettes suit your style/personality? Mrs. Hickey believes that neutral colours are no longer beige or white. “You can turn a simple living room into one of elegance by selecting varying shades or neutral colours such as almond walls with red tones and browns on the trim. You can also add splashes of colour throughout the room with a ‘colour throw’. This, she says adds texture and creates contrast in choosing hues within the same colour scheme. Carefully placed accessories like vases and pillows will offset the neutral tones while added shades of festive orange, chocolate sauce or goldmine will offer instant elegance and a feeling of earthiness and richness. The Vibrant look – Maybe you are more daring where vibrant colours are more to your liking – the reds, oranges, golds, dark purples – that speak of drama and pizzazz. If these are the colours that speak to you then, by all means, create a colour scheme that is unique to your taste. Consider a look reminiscent of the oriental feel by going with black and red with their respective hues for a real standout contrast.

Oil vs Latex – Latex or water-based paint is highly recommended for most paint projects because it is easy to work with and dries quickly but isn’t quite as durable as oil-based paints. However, with the improvements in latex products, it allows for substitution in all scenarios where oil-based paints would traditionally be used. Oil-based paints are better for metal and wood surfaces like wood moldings, doors and frames. It tends to seal better than water-based paint would. It takes longer to dry and the clean-up process will take more effort.Sheens – All paints come in a variety of sheens.
