Curtain and Drapes are two of the most popular window covering options used to create different looks.

When it comes to window treatment, there are so many options that it can be overwhelming to choose what’s right for your home. To make it even more confusing, many people—including interior decorators—use the terms “drapes” and “curtains” interchangeably, mixing in “shades” and “blinds” as if they were synonyms too. However, while all four types of window treatments can be used with many decorating styles and in any room of the home, each have distinct characteristics of its own.

What are the Difference between Curtains and Drapes?

Having trouble choosing? Let us explore the differences between the two.

Curtains

Curtains are fabric panels that are often sold in pairs. They are available in a wide range of colours, widths, lengths and patterns. They are versatile window treatments suitable for all types of rooms, including bathrooms and kitchens. They’re generally made with lightweight fabrics like sheer, cotton and linen. Curtains are not considered a good choice for bedrooms because they can’t keep the room dark by blocking light. Curtains bring softness to rooms and, when paired with valances and shutters, enhance the visual appeal of your home decor. Apart from curtain rods, there are many hanging options, including fabric rings, metal rings and metal grommets, to give this window covering a new look.

Drapes

Drapes are also fabric panels, but they’re made of heavier fabrics than curtains. These window coverings are lined because they’re mostly used to block light and completely darken a room. Drapes are also generally longer and reach from the top of the windows to the floor to create puddles. They are made of heavier, stiffer fabrics like velvet, damask and silk, thus making them a more expensive window covering than curtains. Drapes are mostly available in solid colours that give a formal look to windows. That’s why they’re considered an ideal choice to complement traditional decor.

Which Should You Choose? This decision depends on your needs and budget. For example, if you’re looking for budget-friendly, lightweight, low-maintenance and decorative window treatments that are also easy to install, curtains are your perfect choice. Do you want blackout window coverings that are luxurious, can be operated with the touch of a button, and increase your privacy? Then go for drapes. No matter which you choose, make sure that they suit the purpose of your décor and your taste.
