Scents The Allure of Scents

Story by Nicola A. Cunningham

What is the first thing you notice about a member of the opposite sex? Is it their smile, their eyes, the way they dress or the way they carry themselves? Or could it possibly be how great they smell when they stroll past you?

The way an individual smells is important as it can be an identifying feature especially if you are crushing or are in love with that person. To step into a room and automatically know that your love interest was previously in that same location, all based on the familiar fragrance they are known for, is a heady and heart-warming feeling. Indeed, people at times become so invested that they go out and purchase the very fragrance
that they enjoy smelling on their partner, simply because it reminds them of the person

BUZZZ magazine checked in with two fragrance experts to get their opinion on what is trending locally, their personal choice when it comes to fragrances, and why little Jamaica is such a big spender when it comes to all things ‘scent-sational.’

For Dexter Hall, Logistics & Sales Manager at Euro Brands, a woman should smell just as good as she looks. “I like ‘Lady Million’ It is one of
my favourite and whenever I smell that scent
it invigorates me. Once a woman has it on and passes me I can tell, because I get this instant rush of euphoria. I also like ‘Scandal’ which is not as strong but has a nice lasting bouquet because it’s fruity and smells great. Then you have the original ‘Good Girl’. When you smell it, you can’t mistake it for anything else. You just smell rich and nice. That’s an upper class smell right there!

Euro Brands, which has been operational in Jamaica for the past nine years. As Hall explains it, Jamaicans are a proud set of people who take great care in their appearance and personal hygiene no matter what their income level or economic status may be. They are either able to spend on fragrances without looking at the price tag, batting an eyelid or they are simply ‘boasy’ on a budget.

“One thing with Jamaicans, we love to smell good. One time it was ‘Khus Khus’ but we have graduated from that. Fragrances in Jamaica are big business which is why we are able to hold our own with such a specific niche item. The ‘Khus Khus’ and cheap and clean brands are not working again for people as now they are more exposed to what is out there and their taste are more refined because people travel more and can see and smell for themselves.”
