Alcohol Consumption. How Much is Too Much?

“Okay, this is my last drink for the night and that’s it.” Does this statement ring any bells? Surely, we’ve all been there at least once! No?

Caribbean folks are known to be stalwarts when it comes to alcohol consumption. In fact, we relish the thought of being considered someone who ‘can handle their liquor.’ Typically, whether it’s the occasional girls’ movie night/sleepover, the bros’ games night, a chill at the club or a smashing/rocking party, we never hesitate to include a few alcohol beverages to inspirit the festivities.

For many, alcohol provides the extra buzz to keep us going and perhaps even unleashes an inner party animal that would come out just to ensure we would have a good time. Of course, choosing to indulge in a glass or two of beer, wine, rum, champagne or whatever your preference may be, does not necessarily have to be harmful. As with anything concerning your diet, in order to avoid any major health complications, alcohol should be consumed in moderation.

While the occasional drink can be harmless, excessive drinking over long periods can result in mental as well as physical health issues. Monitoring your alcohol intake is absolutely important for preventing issues resulting from over-consumption or dependency.

Experts identify binge drinking as the root cause of health problems. Truth is, most people are aware that drinking too much alcohol can be dangerous for them and others – whether long term or short term. But, how do you really know how much is too much, especially when you’re at a party with alcohol everywhere? How do you know when to stop? Do you take cues from your friends
to know when to put a cap on it? Not exactly.

Since each person is different, the same amount of alcohol would not necessarily have the same effect on you and your friends. Indicators such as your weight, size, gender, stress level, diet and sleep pattern determine how much alcohol you can afford to have over a short period of time without harming your body.

For healthy adults, between one and two standard servings of alcohol on any given day is low risk and one or less reduces your vulnerability to illnesses derived from excessive drinking even more. But bear in mind that some alcoholic beverages have higher alcohol volumes than others. Wines……
