It has been proven that having a healthy breakfast has many benefits:
• Helps with memory and concentration, resulting in better grades for children.
• Helps to increase your chances of getting your daily requirement of vitamins and minerals.
• Helps to maintain healthy body weight.
We often struggle to figure out what is a healthy breakfast and how we can have one, especially when we are on the go. Here are a few suggestions.
• Wake up 15 minutes early so that they have sufficient time to have breakfast.
• Keep it simple. Some nutritious and quick options are – eggs, bread, breakfast cereal, fruits and milk.
• Fruit smoothies and shakes are quick and nutritious breakfast items that can also be quite
filling.

• Foods from Animals or Legumes – These also give energy but also provide protein which is needed for growth and development. Sources to choose from include milk, yoghurt, cheese, chicken, eggs, fish, peas, beans and nuts.
• Fruits or Vegetables – These are packed with vitamins and minerals that help you to have a healthy immune system. Including a fruit and/or vegetable can be as simple as adding it to cereal, having vegetable juice or having an orange with the rest of your breakfast meal.
Now, breakfast does not have to be time consuming. You can actually prepare a healthy breakfast in a matter of minutes. For example:
• Porridges made with milk and served with fruits such as raisins.
• Breakfast cereals, for example NESTLÉ
breakfast cereals, served with milk and a fruit such as bananas.
• Egg, ham, chicken or cheese sandwich on whole wheat bread with lettuce and tomato with fruit juice.
• Steamed callaloo with green bananas and an orange.

Is it okay to skip breakfast?
For the average healthy person with average levels of physical activity, skipping breakfast will not lead to health problems. However, when you skip breakfast, you miss the opportunity to provide your body with energy and nutrients to help you to be at peak performance in the morning. Research has also shown that those who skip breakfast are more likely to be irritable and have poorer problem solving abilities.
