They say the company you keep can tell a lot about you; but your garbage does an even better job. The garbage we dispose of every day can provide more details about us than we think.

As Jamaicans we throw away quite an interesting collection on a daily basis; from perishables, which speak to our health and wellness to personal items, which provide insight into who we are and the type of life we live. It is important however, to remember what items are safe to throw away and what we should dispose of ourselves. But in true style, Buzzz Magazine is ready to share with you some interesting facts, which will have you going through your own garbage for that last item you discarded; so let’s get dirty…

Garbage usually falls into two categories: biodegradable and non-biodegradable. Biodegradable waste decays with the assistance of decomposers and becomes soil, like plants, animals and paper; while non-biodegradable waste does not decay or will take thousands of years to do so, these include aluminum foil, plastic bags and Styrofoam. The National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) is the agency in Jamaica responsible for the management of garbage across the island; ensuring garbage is collected and disposed of in a systematic mechanism to maintain the health and productivity of the nation and the beauty and aesthetics of the island. General items are usually disposed of, including compostable, paper, plastic, metal/tin, cardboards, glass, textile, and wood/board. Truth be told, a lot of the items in these categories can say more about you than you think and put you at risk.
