What does it mean To Forgive?

What does it mean To Forgive? What does it mean To Forgive?

Has someone you loved ever hurt you? A hurt so real you needed a moment; some space; a break? That special kind of hurt that often requires you to stop and reflect?

How did you forgive them? Have you forgiven them? The ideal would be to say “Yes, I have and moved on.” But what does that even mean? Is it something you can explain or teach to someone? How did you do it and how does it work?

Forgiveness can be defined as the releasing of an offender from the penalty of an offense or the act of receiving absolution from an offense or sin committed. It’s an act that has been described as being profoundly powerful and is regarded by some as “a force which could change the world ending most of our problems.

But how do we achieve this profoundly powerful state?

In the Christian Bible, forgiving and being forgiven is referenced more times than we can count. Most notably in the Lord’s Prayer, where it states “…and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.”

In this verse, found in Matthew 6:12, forgiveness here is referenced almost as a form of currency. And ‘I will forgive them and you forgive me’ type situation. In this instance, forgiveness becomes a choice but more importantly a valuable one that Christians and those who follow Christian teachings must abide by and use daily, so that they themselves may receive absolution.

To go a bit further with this Christian Contractual Clause, Mark 11:25 further states, “And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive them so that your Father in Heaven may forgive you your sins.”

Undoubtedly, we have all fallen short of the glory of God, so being able to just forgive someone and then being forgiven of our own sins, sounds simple enough. But if we’re really honest with ourselves it is never that easy, is it?
