Ancient Egyptians were very much familiar with baking soda. However this familiarity extended the length of a rudimentary version called Natron, which having been purified and synthesized over several years, became known as baking soda, known today for its utility, health, therapeutic and cosmetic value.
Also known as sodium bicarbonate, or bread/cooking soda, the compound exists naturally, as a white powdery substance that has the powerful effect of neutralising both acidic and alkaline environments, in and outside the body. Hence, persons with upset stomachs are usually given relief after drinking a solution of baking soda; some even eat the compound in its powdery form.
Its uses are vast. Among them are the extinguishing of minor kitchen fires and the treatment of dandruff. A few sprinkles of baking soda, mixed with your favourite shampoo, give an awesome hair washing experience!
Cooking
Baking soda, much like baking powder is a leavening/raising agent. Apart from our regular breads, cakes and biscuits, famous Jamaican recipes such as fried dumplings, festivals, rice and peas are hardly the best without use of this wonderful product. Indeed, Jamaicans will remind just how much the product relieves gas, often produced by red eating peas.
Household Cleaning
- Scrub and rinse vegetables and fruits with a solution of baking soda, best for keeping food safe and clean;
- The compound removes surface rust when used as a paste (baking soda and cold water) to clean;
- Removes coffee stains as a warm water solution;
- Deodorizes refrigerators, pet bedding and litter, drains, carpets et al. Don’t go about sprinkling the compound all over your Frigidaire now, simply pop the box open and leave it to stand in a corner;
- It cleans microwaves, removing grime and dirt from floors and ovens, useful for cleaning and deodorizing vinyl shower curtains too;
- ½ a cup of baking soda added to your laundry rinse cycle, creates fresher clothing, sheets and towels;
- So gentle, baking soda may even be used to clean baby clothing and fabric diapers. For diapers, add ½ cup of baking soda to 2 quarts of water and leave to soak. Adding ½ cup to your child’s laundry detergent helps in removing tough stains.
