mask-ne How to avoid Mask-ne

2020 has been one for the history books, as the COVID-19 pandemic has turned the entire world upside down with countries scrambling to cope with this invisible enemy. The coronavirus is a dangerous strain of the SARS virus that is lethal and highly contagious. To contain it, scientists have urged us to wear masks to protect ourselves from contracting or spreading the virus. However, by the looks of it, it will be around for a long time. This has spelled bad news for some major parts of the beauty industry, as these masks which are meant to protect us, has also given rise to a new enemy of the beauty industry…” Mask-ne”.

Mask-ne (mask+ acne) is a term coined to describe facial acne breakouts, skin irritation, and sensitivity that is as a direct result of wearing face masks. This dermatitis affects persons namely on the nose, cheeks, mouth, and chin, as the skin around these areas is very delicate. Many of us especially persons in highly sensitive industries such as frontline staff in the food, retail, tourism, and medical industries have little choice but to wear this protective equipment for hours each day while interacting with others. So how can we protect our skin from breakouts, while protecting our health?

Get comfy

Fabric masks offer a softer alternative to the harsher material and allergy causing chemicals used to make medical grade disposable masks . Available in a wide variety of prints and styles; soft fabric blends such as cotton, polyester, jersey fabric and other natural fibers, are known to be more comfortable. This is because they reduce the irritation and chafing that is common with other disposable and medical grade masks; a huge deal if you have to wear it for hours on end. For added protection, these fabric masks can have a layer of breathable filter material inserted, so that you are both protected AND comfortable! That sounds like a win, win!

Keep it clean

Masks collect a great deal of sweat, oil, dust , bacteria, dead skin cells, and yes; even mucus droplets with each wear, on a daily basis. So, it goes without saying that wearing yesterday’s potpourri of grime is a definite no-no if we want to keep free of the dreaded maskne! Ensure your face masks are kept clean with each wear, as they are on the most sensitive part of your body. Avoid touching, while wearing them, as our hands can also transmit bacteria to the face. Wash face masks with a gentle, non -irritating soap, and wear a clean, dry mask each time. Your skin will thank you!
