‘‘A second serving and an extra round of drinks, thank you.” You needed neither, but since you’re splurging, why not? Time and time again you’ve made promises to yourself about losing weight, being fit and cutting calories. Sounds familiar? We all know someone who said this. Truth is, a healthy lifestyle is difficult to maintain. Most people want to see a significant change in weight overnight, including being fit or they think they can change their eating habits in a week. Unfortunately, achieving any of these goals is more difficult than most people are willing to keep pursuing. But according to celeb fitness trainer Kamila McDonald-Alcock, there is a SMART way to shed the pounds and get fit. She recommends the 10-Pound Pledge, a measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-based programme towards ultimate fitness, a more healthy lifestyle and sustainable weight management.

Kamila, wife to Reggae crooner Siccature ‘Jah Cure’ Alcock, mother to their adorable little girl Kailani-Belle, hosts a variety of local television shows and events, which includes the popular local boxing tournament Wray and Nephew’s Contender. She is also a regular health and fitness writer. Being a television personality means Kamila must always be visually appealing. A fitness enthus iast at heart, she tells us she has always been involved in some form of physical activity.

“At the age of six I started taking dance and piano lessons and quickly learned that it takes a special kind of discipline to excel in both. That same discipline has carried over in to my everyday life even today.” (After winning Miss Jamaica Beach Body 2009, and conquering a 40+lb. weight gain, Kamila committed herself to a life of fitness and helping others overcome personal obstacles that were all too familiar to her. Over the years, along with doing weekly boot camp classes, she eventually began personal fitness training – particularly helping mums to keep off the baby weight and stay fit. She has worked with a number of high-profile people in her career, including entertainer Tami Chynn and educator Nicole McClaren Campbell. And now, Kamila has introduced her first fitness product to the world, the 10-Pound Pledge.

Launched recently, the 10-Pound Pledge is a 5-week exercise programme of daily videos personalized for every day of the journey -they make you feel that you are training alongside Kamila. The daily videos last between 25-45 minutes and are specially designed for the person on the go who may not be able to commit gym hours. Workouts are done five days a week in the comfort of your home and on your own time.

“Being a career mum, and wife, I don’t have the option of being in the gym for two hours a day,” Kamila explained. The programme comes with a nutrition guide and 10 rules Kamila says she lives by and preaches to all her clients. The secret to losing weight and staying fit is that you shouldn’t bite off more than you can chew.
Too many people commit to audacious goals that end up frustrating them so that they fall off the wagon. All the secrets to losing weight and staying fit are in this programme. The goal behind the programme, she tells us, is to create a sustainable, attainable, and fun way to become fit.

According to Kamila the number 10 is a magical one among persons who want to lose weight. She continues, “The idea of losing weight in intervals makes it more achievable. Everyone wants to lose 10 pounds”, –hence the name 10-Pound Pledge. And while she’s in the best shape of her life, at a svelte 120-something pounds, Kamila admits it is a struggle to lose weight and keep fit. “I once tipped the scale at almost at 200 pounds.
My weight had ballooned out of control and I needed to get it back to where it should be.” The journey to losing the weight she said, was as life changing as giving birth. “Fitness is really a journey and it is essential to have someone with experience and a clear goal in mind to help you achieve your own goal. It requires time, patience, consistency, will-power and someone to take the journey with you.”

Having done her homework, Kamila shares that research reveals that you can safely lose up to two pounds a week with a consistent exercise plan and nutritious eating. Therefore, in five weeks you can safely lose 10 pounds.
The challenge is that it takes stern discipline to lose weight. So here is why the 10-Pound Pledge makes sense. The results are not overnight, so if you set a goal to lose 30 pounds and you are not seeing the results you become discouraged.

However, if you take it in intervals of 10 pounds, then it becomes more practical, specific, measurable, achievable and time-based. Don’t just decide that you want to lose 50 pounds. Instead, decide you will lose the 50 pounds in five 10-pound intervals. That way you will better see the results. Additionally, your motivation to lose the weight and get fit will remain high. Set realistic, smart and sustainable goals. What’s more, in the 10-Pound Pledge, you are even allowed a “cheat meal” once a week which Kamila says will give you something to look forward to so you don’t feel deprived.

The simplicity and practicality behind the 10-Pound Pledge make losing weight very achievable. It is a great way to beat the Caribbean’s most deadly chronic diseases – diabetes and hypertension, which are both related to obesity. If fitness or weight loss is your goal, check out the programme; it offers convenience and works for the everyday person.

Here are some tips to lose weight and stay fit, courtesy of celeb fitness trainer Kamila McDonald-Alcock:

  • Maintain consistency by always following through with your exercise schedule.
  • Have a plan – something that is structured and easy to follow. That is what the 10-pound Pledge is. You don’t have to think too hard, or overthink for that matter, with this programme. Without a plan you will fail.
  • Have a nutrition plan – There is no fitness plan without a good nutrition plan. You could go to the gym for an entire week and work out tirelessly but fail to reach your goal if you are not eating properly and eating to fuel your body, rather than to feed it.
  • Eliminate processed foods – Instead of white rice, have brown rice; instead of white pasta, have whole wheat pasta, and whole wheat bread. Stay away from anything with too much added sugar.
  • Also, go for the foods that are high in protein and fibre and low in sodium; include lots of fruits and vegetables and lots of water. Complex carbohydrates are essential, too—there is a misconception that carbohydrates are not good, but it is in fact the right carbohydrates that are essential.
  • Talk about it – tell your friends and family members so that they will be there to support you on your journey as you improve your health and more importantly hold you accountable.
