Why are Men so Obsexxed?

Both men and women take pleasure in the act of sexual intercourse maybe even equally but most women can go through an entire day, week, month or even longer periods without thinking about it. Men will constantly replay an experience in their minds or make visualizations of having sex with an attractive woman who may have passed by that day or weeks before. See the difference? It is acknowledged that not every man is interested in purely sexual experiences or is obsessed with sex. However, generally, men do place a disproportionate weight on sexual intercourse but this is not entirely their fault. Studies show that some males have a medical and/or psychological problem (weakness not illness) resulting in an obsession with sexual intercourse. Such males are deemed be suffering from satyriasis: hypersexuality, compulsive sexual behaviour – the sexual addiction arising from childhood experiences or hormone imbalances. We are not speaking of those men. Buzzz Magazine highlights four reasons why men are so sex-obsessed.

Men are from Mars, Women are from…

The male psyche is tuned in to sex and the opposite sex from an early age (minus a few exceptions). There are many answers to the question “why” ranging from hormonal stimuli to the societal influences. From inception in the mother’s womb, the male hormone, testosterone (T) begins to assist in the formation of the male reproductive tissues, testis, prostate and genitalia and this production continues producing pre-pubertal effects. It is easier and more common for a mother or father to teach their son that the structure he is beginning to notice hanging in front of him, is his penis, than it is to explain to their daughter what the vagina is. This dissimilar anatomical make-up also heightens male curiosity. Then, at the start of normal puberty when T-levels rise, the brain is stimulated to focus on the opposite sex as well as develop a stronger interest in the female body while increasing libido. Young males who begin to develop these sexual urges, will openly speak about them with an adult or even have the topic addressed well before the feelings arise. Adolescent females would rather write about it in a journal and cover it up having the idea that the urges are of alien nature. As it relates to hormone production, there is no solid proof and insufficient research that testosterone alone influences a man’s interest in and obsession with sex since both males and females produce testosterone – the big difference is that T-levels are almost 10 times greater in men.

Need to Know Basis

Dr. Karen Carpenter, Researcher, Psychologist and Clinical Sexologist, says, “Socially, men have traditionally been given more room to speak about sexual desire and performance; women who do, are seen as vulgar or indiscreet.” Visit the nearest corner where there is a gathering of men enjoying their preferred drink or a game of dominoes and you will not be surprised to hear that the subject of their conversation is one of the three: money, sporting activities and women and sex (in no particular order). “Most men have sex with some (“vulgar women”), so if men are preoccupied with sex and are having lots of sex, then they are having it with women. When it becomes acceptable for women to speak openly about their sexual desires we will then be saying ‘women are obsessed with sex’,” added
Dr. Carpenter.

Sex and Success

Speaking of socialization, in Jamaica’s society, adolescent males who associate themselves with older males or male role models may be provoked into thinking that if you have not acquired or participated in activities that involve making money or getting and/or having sexual intercourse with a woman – or for some more than one woman – then ‘yuh nah seh nutten’. Oscar Wilde said

“Everything in the world is about sex, except sex. Sex is about power.”

And here lies the third reason for the “obsession” men display for the opposite sex, the act of sex and having sex with the opposite sex. This accounts for quite a few answers actually – for the pressure young men feel to share an experience with the opposite sex, the association between success and power, and because it was a big deal while growing up. Jamaican Dancehall artiste, Beenie Man said, “Man fi have nuff gyal and gyal inna bungle”. Now, despite the lyrics chosen as an example, let’s not confuse the question of why men are so obsessed with sex, with discussion related to why men have multiple partners- this is beyond an obsession with sex and a whole other topic. But it is this social thought that influences the change from curiosity to passion to obsession.

She made me do it!

Each time a female passes by a male, his mind begins to wander. When someone suggests introducing a male friend to a female friend, he will ask “how does she look?” while she will ask, “does he have a job?”

The way females look, dress and act also has an effect on a male’s sexual drive.

And so as to not forget, not all men are obsessed with the activity but with the feeling of fulfillment that is associated with the act. This fulfillment comes with the whole package. A majority of males would prefer having a solid, adventurous and exciting relationship with one partner who could fulfill their sexual fantasies to the level of their “obsession”. For every man who is constantly horny there is a sexually compatible match. After a man has met a woman, he continues to delve into her wants and needs, in most cases it will be affection and stability but unfortunately the mode in which these men seek affection often times relates to sexual intercourse. So they keep pursuing sex to satisfy these emotions and once satisfied they believe they have reached the point of nirvana- and so the cycle continues until we call it obsession.
