Relationships are never “one size fits all”, but we all can agree that certain elements are necessary for making the relationship a success. Communication is ranked the highest characteristic by relationship experts, followed by the intimate act of sex. So, if communication is number one why is sex so important in a relationship?
What are the benefits of sex?
Though generalized as two or more people being intimate, the benefits range from health to emotional and physical well-being. According to Healthline, it is a great confidence booster that allows the parties involved to connect both bodies and mind.
Physically, sex influences positive immune functions. This one might come as a shocker, but experts believe sex is a form of light exercise that can help participants burn a few calories. Who knew the remedy for a stressful day could be intercourse as it is an outlet to relieve the tension? The heart is a crucial and important organ to the human body.
Research has proven that sex, yes sex, can even reduce the risk of heart disease. In addition, it has been deemed as an act that deepens the emotional connection in a relationship and allows partners to share themselves in a selfless and pleasurable way.
How important is sex in your relationship?
Sex has arguably been described as ‘the icing on the cake.’ While it is not the whole cake many have argued, “what is the cake without icing?”
The reason people partake will vary from person to person. However, it is important to note that in a relationship sex is not exclusive to one individual and so the challenge to build a vibrant and mutual sexual connection is truly ‘relationship goals.’ Jadeen “Jade” Mcghie popular media personality, shared how strongly she believes sex plays an integral role in a relationship, “On a scale from 1 to 10, 9! only being because I don’t want to say 10.”
Managing Director of IConsult Jamaica Jermaine Brown evened the target by ranking the value of sex in a relationship a powerful 9, “I rate it really high; I’ll give it a nine for not wanting to give it all but leaning closer to a ten.” Relationships have different components that make them work, but without sex can the parties involved still maintain a healthy relationship?
Mcghie pointed out that though sex is important it doesn’t represent the entire relationship, sometimes partners will have moments when the sexual activity will lessen for various reasons. “If you’re in a relationship and both of you work or you have kids, there’ll be times when you don’t have sex, because you’re tired and there other things going on that will collide, but it can’t go on for too long.”
While Jermaine acknowledges that the role of sex in a relationship is highly valuable he went on to share that “There are other elements in a relationship that impact sex such as communication, emotional intelligence, understanding your partner and empathy that enhance the sexual experience”, with this in mind it is reasonable to acknowledge that other elements also play a collective role in the act sex in a relationship. Since this act is very pivotal in a relationship, how can a couple ensure that they are having sex to satisfy each partner’s need?
Brown shared that as an older man dating a younger partner, he has resorted to scheduling sex with his partner to ensure they maintain the connection. Jade on the other hand made it clear she wouldn’t be interested in writing sex on her to-do-list. “No that is not gonna work,” she went on to say, “You don’t schedule when you go to the supermarket? Why are you going to schedule when you have sex? You can schedule some things in your life like running or health stuff but not sex.”
