In the usual glamour and fanfare on occasions where our nation’s top performers are recognised, all came out with passion and pageantry for the 2017 staging of the annual RJR Gleaner National Sportsman and woman awards, held at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel.
“Absolutely Captivating” was the only way to describe the atmosphere from start to finish. It was ‘lights, camera action’. Selfies and pictures dominated the post gala period and social media feeds were “on fleek” with luxurious images of the night’s proceedings, providing fans with blow by blow commentary, aided by the use of popular hashtags.
The show was moderated by media personalities, Neville Bell and Dalia Harris. Don Anderson received the Chairman’s Award for his outstanding contribution to the development of sport in Jamaica over the years. Oshane Thomas was the recipient of the People’s Choice “Performance of the Year” award and several presentations of merit were given to athletes in recognition of their outstanding performance in their sporting disciplines for 2017.

The Gleaner Iconic Award was given to Veronica Campbell-Brown, cheered by a thunderous applause and a standing ovation.
Guest Speaker, Senator Don Webhy lived up to expectations as he treated the gathering to profound messages. He emphasised the importance of viewing sport as a business and noted the significance of private sector participation to the success and advancement of sport; charging his colleagues to step forward and recognise that the time is now to build on a solid and financially sound future for the sport.
Renowned Jamaican artiste Ernie Smith, performed popular songs that turned the room into a chorus of melody, setting the tone for the anticipated announcement of the sportsman and sportswoman of the year. The name Aliyah Atkinson resonated with great splendor, bringing everyone to their feet instantaneously and with thunderous cheers of applause. Aliyah’s reply came via video, however she filled the room with heartfelt gratitude and an acknowledgement that continuous hard work, sweat and determination is well worth the wait and that it was the sport of swimming’s turn to share in the glory of recognition.
