The culture of the cellphone camera

The desire to use the camera to capture content is so overwhelming that it has become a practice to witness altercations or life threatening events and record it using our cameras instead of seeking assistance or offering same where possible. On the other hand, the cell phone camera has been used to capture and expose moments of brutality, abuse and indiscretion that would otherwise go unreported. While there is value in bringing to light events which have lived for too long in darkness, we must still be cognizant of the unwritten code of ethics and acceptable social norms which are becoming extinct with each new generation.

The culture of the cellphone camera

The cell phone camera has become the all-seeing eye of modern day society. Everything we do, see or consume is captured using our cell phone cameras. The cell phone camera is used to record everything, from taking pictures and videos of ourselves, to the food we eat, the places we go, the people and things we see; the cell phone camera captures it all. This habit has become a part of current social norms, so much so, that we have to wonder, is it harmful or just the current cultural trend?

We live in the age of access; where everything is captured using our cell phone camera and shared online; but is this a good or bad practice? Across generations, the cell phone camera is the tool used to capture everything that happens around us. Often times this is done for social entertainment, but many times the cell phone camera is used to capture images and videos without consideration for appropriateness, the lines of which has seemingly become blurred. From recording fatal accidents, to sexual encounters and other devastating incidents, nothing seems to be off limits when it comes to using the cell phone camera to capture images and videos.
