For the love of wines‘Tis the season for wines and wow, we certainly do have many choices! Jamaicans have progressed with the times as our palettes become more and more sophisticated and can appreciate the sensory aromas and notes of wine. Wines originate from many parts of the world with the majority hailing from The Old World: France, Italy, Portugal, Germany and Spain. And, The New World: USA, Canada, South Africa, New Zealand, Australia, Chile, Argentina and even China!
Wine is an alcoholic beverage made from fermented grape juice. Wines have three colours: red, white, and rose and also three types, still/table, sparkling, and fortified wines. Not unlike the variety of mangoes that we have, e.g. East Indian, Julie, Number 11 and so on, so are the many types of grapes used in winemaking. Some common grape names are: Merlot, Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir, Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling and so on.
