Secret Messages: Your Body is trying to tell you

Do you ever feel like your body is talking to you? If you feel that way, then you are probably right. Our bodies know us better than we do and it speaks to us in ways we may or may not understand.
Your body may speak to you based on the different things you crave, eat or even through your aches and pains. It is for that same reason you may go to your private physician who relies on the information you report to him or her along with other assessments to identify what exactly is happening. Do you remember those days you crave for dirt or ice? Those days when you frequently pass urine or found your clothes start to get loose on you suddenly? Your body may just have been sending you hints.

1. Here are a few secret messages that your body may be trying to send you: 1. The fingernails have many secrets to one’s health, from the colour, shape and the presence or absence of ridge to the nails. A pale nail may indicate anaemia while a nail that has an increase in the curvature and broadening of the base of the nail may indicate a range of illnesses to the respiratory system, heart or the liver. Signs of horizontal lines called ridges are called Beau’s line and may be a sign of thyroid disease, diabetes, mumps or syphilis

2. Pica: The craving of non-food substances, for example, craving and chewing of ice (pagophagia) and eating clay (geophagia) may be an indication of iron deficiency.

3. Your gums may appear swollen to you, and if you think so you are likely to be correct. There may be an inflammation in the mouth and hence the swelling may be due to bacterial plaque. The white filmy debris that congregates along the gum lines and the surface of the teeth can cause cavity or gum infections. An oral infection caused by virus and fungi are likely to affect oral health and cause irritation. Nutrients are essential for strong healthy gums (pink and glossy); however deficiency of vitamin C and B can result in the gum being swollen and may lead to easy gum bleed. It could also be as simple as an irritation to the gum by the food that is consumed that results in gum swelling.

4. If you notice that there is a change in the pattern of your stool, for example, there is an alteration between diarrhea and constipation, you would need to see your doctor. This type of bowel habit combined with abdominal pain and other symptoms could be due to Irritable Bowel Syndrome. The precise cause is unknown; however, it may be due to the severe infection, abnormalities in the nerves of your digestive system or muscle contractions in the intestines.

5. Have you noticed you have an increase in urination at nights? This is called nocturia, you may want to see your doctor and to be screened for diabetes. Persons with diabetes may also have nocturia secondary to uncontrolled blood sugar.

6. Significant weight loss: Unintentionally losing a massive amount of weight within a short period of time. Approximately half of cancer patients suffer from a wasting syndrome called cachexia. Despite what is eaten and no change in caloric consumption, there is still an inability to maintain one’s weight. It is important that you speak to your doctor who will do a thorough assessment to rule out any form of malignancies. Some of these malignancies (cancers) are lung, pancreatic, biliary and colon cancer.

Your body may be sharing subtle clues with you that if taken seriously, may reduce the risk or severity of certain life-threatening disorders. Be assured that it may range from as simple as a change in your sleeping pattern to a change in the colour of your palm or nail bed. It is in one’s best interest to be curious when there are unexpected changes in the body and seek professional advice.
