Dancehall Mixtape Vol 5

Dancehall Mixtape Vol 5

This Dancehall event of an album weaves together 38 tracks – no skits – and effectively spins as a seamless victory lap around the genre. Graced with a hurricane of artistes including heavyweights Vybz Kartel, Aidonia, Alkaline, Mavado, contenders for the bet Vershon and Dexta Daps, Dancehall Mixtape VOL.5 is easily a perfect soundtrack for any cross-country travel.

Stitched together by DJ Wayne, the compilation – though lengthy – doesn’t drag on due to the selected tempo. If consumed in bite-sized portions the album is full of cultural references, typical Dancehall hot topics of marijuana, money and women and sure enough the perfect amount of bravado from each selected artiste. One of the most important assets of the project is the fact that it truly captures the essence of the Dancehall culture; unfiltered, unapologetic and real.

While we love having the heavyweights of the genre flex their vocal and lyrical creativities, it would be great to see a few female artistes placed on the same pedestal – as Spice and Shenseea had a phenomenal 2017 and in most cases outshined their male counterparts.
