The Hit List Vol. 5

hit-list-vol-5

The Hit List Vol. 5 was released in December 2013, following the trend of Volume 4’s animated album cover-art portraying the featured artistes. Disc 1 is a lively blend of the Dancehall hits that ruled the Christmas season and still rule now; it opens with the voice of maturing young deejay, QQ, performing “One Drop” which is followed by “Ghetto Gyal”. Disc 1 has the potential to get a party going as singles such as RDX’s “The Bruk out Song”; Baby Cham’s “Yardie Party” and Popcaan’s “Party Non Stop” will make people move on any dance floor”. Disc 2 is the opposite of Disc 1 as it gives a more conscious and mello vibe to cool down the adrenaline pumped from the previous Disc.

The voice that stands out on Disc 2 is Vybz Kartel’s. Since the ‘clean versions’ of the artiste’s hits were included, Kartel’s lyrics are peaceful, thought-provoking and polished – this certainly highlights the controversial artiste’s other side. Overall, the album’s pull is the diversity of artistes, including Lenya Wilks who may be remembered from top three of the Digicel Rising Stars Competition of 2007. Although not a ‘hit’ as yet and while she is missing from the animation on the album art, her song “Old Time Love” (ft. Tarrus Riley) – and a single from the “Singy Singy’s” self-titled 2013 album – is an ear-opener. Overall the Hit List Vol. 5 is a lively collection of Dancehall, Reggae and crossover Soca-Dancehall ‘riddims’. The two-disc album is an impressive compilation based on lyrical quality, concord/harmony, and the spirited vibe of each track.
