DANCEHALL DON 2
Author: K. Sean Harris
Article by: Nicola Cunningham
Book 1 review
Not even a global crisis could halt K. Sean Harris’ creative cranium from churning out another literary hit in the form of ‘Dancehall Don 2’, the scintillating sequel to part one that left readers ‘jonesing’ for more. Well, he acquiesced to the demands of his fans, delivering yet another powerful novel, further cementing his claim to the local literary throne as the king of erotica. But to simply crown him as such is not entirely fair as Harris not only teases but makes you think with characters that are as relatable as they are rhythmic.
Picking up back on the journey to stardom of Tristan known to the world as ‘6lock’, he moves from being a star in the making to a musical icon, all by the age of 20. After a two year hiatus where he mourned the passing of those he cherished, he pours his pain into the microphone with amazing effects. His resurgence strategically etched his name into dancehall history and even his enemies had to grudgingly respect him. The impending birth of his first child made him a man but did not make him soft as he forged alliances all over the global while keeping an eye out for the main women in his life Yendy, Paris and Kerry.
Those on the periphery of his life have their axes, assignments or agendas and while for some he is a saviour, other view him as Satan and intend on revelling in his demise. The wait however will be a long one as 6lock welcome other young artistes into the fold, proving that he has the business acumen to spot raw talent. Of course it cannot be a K. Sean novel without the sex and there is lots of it for those who yearn to live vicariously through these brazenly raw characters.
A large part of the appeal as mentioned before is just how beloved some characters are to readers mainly because we all know people who have similar traits and personalities. We all know a Lashara, a Geena, a Drop Out Locks, a Yendy, Mashonda , Pebbles, Tessa, Paris or a Israelite Shotta. We all know individuals who are either too greedy, too promiscuous, love to steal, love to carry news, too bad mind or who carries excess mental baggage. Hence when Harris puts these people in book form and weaves his literary magic, it is as if he is in our heads with all the shenanigans and tomfoolery that makes human nature so infinitely interesting.
All of this leads to a crescendo of epic proportion because while to characters may be relatable, the plot is not predictable in the least, therefore you are guaranteed to lose sleep staying up and finishing the novel, devouring it like how a fat man would polish off his favourite cheesecake!
