Wind Brings Prosperity

Wind Brings Prosperity

As Jamaica experiences positive growth across multiple sectors, citizens’ lives have been made easier. Wigton Windfarm Limited, a subsidiary of the Petroleum Corporation of Jamaica, is also working to contribute to that. It is the largest wind energy facility in the English- speaking Caribbean. As far back as 1996, the Government realized that in order for Jamaica to actually see its energy resource potential it would have to develop renewable energy sources. This gave birth to the Wigton Windfarm in 2004, with a mandate to support the diversification of Jamaica’s energy mix. The rolling hills, of Rose Hill in Manchester, are home to these magnificent windmill structures that blow through the enveloping high winds each day.

The company’s first plant Wigton I, a 20.7MW wind generating facility was an immediate success. In 2010 the plant was expanded by 18MW when Wigton II was commissioned bringing the wind farm’s total capacity to 38.7MW. The company’s performance surpassed its goals which resulted in an additional 24MW being added in early 2016 when Wigton III came on stream. This has since reduced the national oil consumption by approximately 406,000 barrels saving Jamaica almost J$3 billion.
