Fit for Adventure

Jamaicans are generally highly conscious of their health and wellbeing. But if we’re being honest, a sense of consciousness is really where it stops for many persons. Despite the warnings about the various types of cancers and the overwhelming number of persons with diabetes and high blood pressure, there’s still a reluctance to turn that consciousness into something physical which could transform our health and wellbeing.

Those who decide to cultivate a healthy lifestyle are usually tasked with finding a nearby gym for regular, occasional or periodic exercise flings. But, creating a gym life isn’t an easy reality or for many Jamaicans- the constraints range from proximity and convenience to time and cost. However, maintaining a healthy lifestyle can be hassle-free; the trick is to seamlessly integrate physical activities into your daily life which takes you outside of the gym. Here are some of the things you can consider to get that done:

Sign up for dance classes Dancing is a fun, energetic and in some cases a cost effective way to maintain a healthy lifestyle without any elaborate effort. And just like going to the gym, you can do it with friends, family, a spouse, a complete stranger or all on your own. Lifestyle coaches believe dancing is even a healthier route than taking to the gym. They say many people, while dancing release endorphins while getting a good cardio workout. Furthermore, the average person who engages in regular dance activities is said to live longer than someone who doesn’t.

For starters, try attending a Zumba dance and workout session. Zumba has classes all over the corporate area and in Montego Bay. Checkout a location near you on their website at www.zumba.com. You can also try free salsa classes organized by the salsa society Jamaica or join the salsa band every Friday at the New Kingston Conference Centre, right in the heart of the city. There are many other dance opportunities out there which you can seek out and try. What are you waiting on? Let’s go dancing.

Plan a hiking trip

Outside of the sun, sand and sea rhetoric, Jamaica is also known for its mountainous terrain which adds tremendous aesthetic to the island’s overall beauty. But we can do so much more than take pictures of how the hills and mountains fold in perfect alignment. One option is to go hiking. Take an adventure, experience nature in an entirely different space while you challenge yourself to go higher. It’s a good way to get a well-needed physical workout, without focusing on the workout. You’ll find yourself doing pull ups, stretches, crunches and so much more. Make it a regular weekly, monthly, quarterly or annual must do event.

Outside of the mountain trail which could be in your backyard, here are some places you can consider for your next hiking trip: Blue Mountain Peak Trail, Cockpit Country Trail, Mount Zion Hill Walk and Mayfield Falls. You’ll also find that hiking makes for a good vacation outing. So, take some time off and go experience nature first hand.
