All I want for Christmas is Ham, Wine & Sorrel

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Can you believe it’s that time again? The feeling of merriment in the air, the cool breeze blowing and before you know it the plazas will be lit up with colourful lights and over the top decorations. What’s not to love? But is it really a Jamaican Christmas without food, food and more food? And a holiday dinner table is incomplete without the star of the show; the Christmas Ham. Smoked, fried, baked, glazed, covered with pineapple slices; you can never go wrong with Christmas Ham.

Buzzz Magazine got the opportunity to have a chat with Shanae Bennett; Brand Manager for Foods at Caribbean Producers Jamaica Limited (CPJ), to discuss all things ham for the holidays. “This year, in addition to our Boneless, Whole leg, Half Leg & Picnic Hams, CPJ has introduced its new Jerk Picnic Ham! Our Jerk Picnic Ham is infused with traditional Jamaican jerk spices and complemented with a robust and Natural Hickory Wood taste. Hickory wood is known for its sweet, robust and bacon-esque flavour,” Shanae explained. CPJ will be serving up its Fully Cooked Ham which has undergone processing/cooking and can be consumed cold or reheated for your added satisfaction. Bennett then went on to highlight what sets CPJ ham apart from the rest; their unique cooking style. “Quality is at the heart of everything we do at CPJ and this is extended to our product lines.

CPJ Hams do not contain liquid smoke, they are Naturally Smoked using Hickory Wood to elevate their flavour profile.” Delicious taste combined with added health benefits, what more could you ask for? With such high quality ingredients, mouth-watering taste and that convenience factor, quantities are limited so grab them while you can!
As you can see, CPJ has everything you may possibly need to make your holiday feast the best one yet but if you’re still uncertain about where to start, simply visit CPJ Market & Deli at 71 Lady Musgrave Road, Kingston 10 and ask about their Ham baking service.Spirits

Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey will be partnering with CPJ Hams for the third year and they are pulling out all the stops. The harmonious blend of the Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey and other Jamaican elements to create their signature ham glaze has become a staple over the years. While speaking with Kemmar Lewis; CPJ’s Category Manager for Spirits, he explained the history behind working with the Jack Daniel’s brand. “For the first year we used the Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Honey the second year we used the Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Fire and now this year we’re going to be using the Old No. 7 Tennessee Sour Mash Whiskey, which will add flavour notes of vanilla beans and coconut to your CPJ ham” Can you say match made in heaven?

Not only does this line make for the perfect ham glaze but it can also be utilized in various aspects of cooking your holiday dishes. It is ideal for cooking both sweet and savoury meals. “Once you use The Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Fire you’re going to have essence of cinnamon and when you use the Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Honey you’re going to have that kind of marmalade, honey and vanilla notes coming through and you will also find more woody, nutty notes coming through from the Old No. 7, “said Lewis. CPJ will also be getting involved with various events over the course of the holiday period to showcase the versatility of the Jack Daniel’s brand as well as sampling in Supermarkets Island wide.Wines

Now that our bellies are filled with tantalizing CPJ Ham, it’s time to pop bottles, take a sip and celebrate with the wide selection of CPJ Wines and Champagnes. Category Manager for Wines at CPJ, Ohran Cato gave Buzzz Magazine all the details on what they have in store for wines and champagnes this season. “For the Christmas CPJ is traditionally more focused on red wines, bolder wines that tend to generate a little more heat to keep you warm for the cooler months ahead. Wines like your Cabernets, Merlots, and trending right now are blends so you will find a lot of red wine blends being sought after” he said. Best seller Josh red wine blends offer a fruity taste with a hint of spiciness that makes for the ideal finish to ham and that infamous Jamaican fruit cake. If you’re not a wine drinker then you will still be able to celebrate in style with a bottle of Laurent Perrier also known as LP Rosé, which has become a real crowd pleaser during the celebratory months. Cato also shared his number one tip for persons when choosing the right wine to match your personal taste. “Wines are very opinionated so choose something that you like. The idea is really drink what you like. Safest bet is for persons who are non-wine drinkers it’s easiest for them to opt for blends because it’s not too dry, not to too sweet, its somewhere right in the middle. And that gives them a good opportunity of feeling the best of both worlds.” said Cato.Sorrel

For some it’s eggnog, for others it’s hot chocolate but here in Jamaica one thing for sure is that Christmas isn’t truly Christmas until you enjoy that first ice cold glass of sorrel drink. Although you can indulge in this traditional Jamaican drink all year round, it has become increasingly popular during the holiday season. Adding Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey to spice up the flavours, some opt for white rum or red wines and others add a bit of lime juice or simple syrup for extra sweetness. Whichever way you decide to prepare your sorrel drink, we can all agree that it is undeniably addictive. The CPJ mantra is “Discover Premium” and that’s exactly what they strive to put forward to the consumer consistently. Though we all want to enjoy the festivities, always remember to drink responsibly. So as we trim the trees, sing along to our favourite Mariah Carey Christmas playlist and have a jolly ole time; remember that no holiday soiree is complete without a dash of CPJ.
