Different countries have different names for this fruit — from Graviola and Guanabana to Brazilian paw paw — but one thing is clear: Soursop offers quite a few health benefits. Officially called “Annona muricata”, It is found in the Caribbean and Central America but is also cultivated in India and South-East Asia. If you are lucky to live in a place where soursop is easy to come by-why not make use of its amazing qualities?

BEAUTY ASSISTANT

Due to its high calcium content, Guanabana strengthens your hair, nails and bones. It can also be used for weight loss: there is health and beauty at every size but if you wouldn’t mind getting slimmer, adding soursop to your diet is a great and healthy way to do so. Because of high water content — 81% — this fruit speeds up your metabolism and leaves you feeling more energized. For beauty purposes, enjoy it fresh or as a smoothie.

IMPROVED DIGESTION

Soursop contains 83% of the recommended fiber intake which is responsible for smooth work of the digestive tract. That’s why eating the fruit results in improved digestion and intestinal flora. It also normalizes the acidity of the stomach leading to less bloating and abdominal discomfort.

REDUCED INFLAMMATIONS

Throughout history, different ethnic groups have been using soursop to fight inflammation and to relieve pain. Modern studies confirm this: Antioxidants found in soursop have anti-inflammatory properties and keep the cells healthy by fighting free radicals in the body.

POTENTIAL TO FIGHT CANCER

There is some evidence that soursop slows down the growth of cancerous cells, especially when it comes to breast cancer and leukemia. It should not be used as a primary treatment since the fruit’s anti-carcinogenic effects haven’t been fully explored yet, but more studies are being done to discover its potential. Another hypothesis suggests that soursop may be effective in cancer prevention.

MANAGE BLOOD PRESSURE

Being high in potassium, soursop helps your body to get rid of sodium — which is a contributing factor to high blood pressure. In fact, soursop lowers blood pressure without increasing your heart rate! Therefore, this fruit is a delicious way to lower the risk of heart disease and heart attack.
