What is Quinoa

(Keen-Wah)?
Quinoa is a seed that is prepared and eaten as a grain. In recent years, Quinoa has been suggested as a good alternative to rice and bread as it provides 14 grams protein and 5 grams more fiber than white rice offers and can help you feel full faster with less portions. Quinoa can be a suitable option for weight loss and other dietary restrictions as it maintains blood sugar levels, low carb and is also gluten-free. Therefore, if you feel you can’t give up your rice and peas, just give quinoa and peas a try!

How do I cook Quinoa?

Quinoa comes in a ball shape and different colours such as white, red and black. we have learnt that you can cook Quinoa basically the same as you would for rice, on the stove top, in a rice cooker or any other way you would just substitute quinoa where you would have rice.

Here are a few tips to get the best results:

  • Rinse and Drain in cold water in a fine mesh strainer for 1-2 minutes.
  • Do a 2:1 portion of liquid to quinoa (e.g., 2 cups stock to 1 cup quinoa)
  • For improved flavour, put quinoa dry then toast on stove top in a pot for 2 minutes before adding your liquid.
  • Bring to a boil in a saucepan and reduce to a simmer on medium-low heat for 15 to 20 minutes.
  • Turn off heat and leave quinoa covered to allow it to finish cooking and absorb the remaining moisture.
  • Quinoa should be translucent and tender. Fluff and separate quinoa with a fork before serving

There are many recipes currently available using quinoa and you can add vegetables and other proteins such as a quinoa bowl (rice bowl) using vegetables, chicken and your favourite seasonings tossed in a bowl with quinoa, or Salmon with vegetable quinoa. Quinoa can be eaten for breakfast, lunch, dinner and even dessert.
