Healthy Summer Smoothies

Sizzling, hot and sexy; screams a summer body – bringing us to believe that this term -“summer body” was not arbitrarily coined. Year after year persons hit the gym in the months approaching summer in an effort to attain the prized physique. During these peak vacation months, the summer season is infamous for the countless trips to the beach, where we get to show off our sexy bikini bodies.
Summer can get pretty hot, and sticky. We continuously struggle to find a balance between maintaining the hot body while trying to keeping it cool. Sweet, sugary drinks such as sodas, slushies and icicles, are readily available and can be tempting as a quick fix to quench your thirst and satisfy those taste buds. This time of year, also brings a spirit of freedom as our outside adventures increase, we tend to eat out more and we often times overindulge and forget to keep on track with eating healthily.

Luckily, smoothies perfectly blend us up a solution of nutritious, flavourful, thirst-quenching, easy-to-make and carry, on-the-go goodness. Smoothies traditionally consist of fruits and or vegetables, along with some sort of liquid, which may be, water, coconut water, milk or yogurt, you may even throw in some nuts if you like. It’s quite easy to get carried away with additional sweeteners however, so here are six smooth tips to blend up the perfect healthy meal or snack that will cool you down on the hot summer days.

1. Choose fresh fruit as often as possible. This will add loads of flavor without the use of artificial sweeteners. When preparing fruit for you smoothie, freeze left overs for easy use in the future. (Frozen fruits make smoothies creamier)

2. Sweeten sparingly and smartly. Personally, after all the tips given above, I wouldn’t want to spoil a perfectly good smoothie. However for those that need a little more flavor, opt for something like (a tbsp.) of honey, which has antibacterial properties and other health benefits.

3. Add low fat yogurt, low fat milk, or almond milk (lactose free) if you want to have a more filling smoothie, for example as a meal replacement or even breakfast. An excellent way of making it filling without all the extra calories.

4. Avocadoes are an excellent alternative to bananas. Bananas are usually the go to for adding body and sweetness to smoothies, however they also easily add a lot of sugar and can sometimes mask other flavours. For variety, and an increase in vitamins as well as a great source of fat, opt for avocadoes, which are especially available in the summer months.
